Thales of Miletus (c. 624 - c. 546 BC) was a Greek philosopher and mathematician, and one of the Seven Sages of Greece. Regarded as the first philosopher by Aristotle, Thales is notably famous for his hypothesis that the originating principle of nature and the nature of matter was a single material substance: water, a thesis by which the universe can be explained.
In modern days, Thales has become equally famous amongst school pupils for his geometrical discoveries, the Thales and intercept theorems, inspired not only by his mathematical applications but also by his travels to Egypt.
By choosing Thales as our oracle, we recognise Thales's teachings and theoretical applications but above all his overarching approach to knowledge and infinite curiosity about the surrounding world.
